In Valorant, sound is not atmosphere, it is information. Here is what you actually need to hear, the free setting to turn on before you buy anything, and how to choose without paying for things you do not need.

The headset is the most underrated peripheral in a Valorant setup. It usually gets chosen last, on grounds of immersion or style, when it is probably the third most decisive item after the mouse and the monitor.

The reason lies in the game itself. Valorant was built around a demanding approach to audio: footsteps carry a long way, every ability has its own sound signature, and crouch-walking is completely silent. A player who hears properly has constant access to information that their opponent does not know they are giving away.

So this article is not about soundtracks or immersion. It is about what lets you hear an opponent before you see them, and about what a headset is really worth for that.

IN VALORANT, SOUND IS INFORMATION

Before talking about gear, you have to know what you are trying to hear. Here are the five sound sources that genuinely decide rounds.

Footsteps The most important sound in the game. An opponent who is running can be heard long before they can be seen, and crouch-walking is completely silent. Telling apart movement above you, below you or behind a wall decides the round.
Reloads and weapon swaps A reload you hear is a two second window in which the opponent is vulnerable. It is also the cue that confirms their exact position.
Abilities Every ability has its own sound signature. Recognizing a Brimstone smoke, a Sova recon bolt or a Sage wall tells you not only where they are, but which agent is playing across from you and what they are setting up.
The Spike plant and defuse The plant beep can be located precisely, and so can the sound of the defuse. That is what tells you whether to rush or to play for time.
Ultimate voice lines When an opponent activates their ultimate, the voice line is audible. It is free information that tells you exactly what to anticipate.
What that means for choosing a headset

All of those sound cues sit in the mids and the highs, not in the bass. A heavily colored headset with boosted lows, the kind plenty of multimedia oriented models offer, masks precisely the frequencies you need to hear.

So the right headset for Valorant is not the one that sounds the most spectacular, it is the one that sounds the most neutral.

BEFORE YOU BUY: TURN HRTF ON

This is the most profitable piece of advice on this page, and it costs nothing. Valorant has a built in spatialization system called HRTF, for Head-Related Transfer Function. It reproduces the way the shape of your head and your ears alters a sound depending on where it comes from, which is what lets your brain place it.

In practice, what it improves most is vertical localization: knowing whether the opponent is above you, below you, or on your level. That is exactly what plain stereo renders worst, and it is decisive on maps with several levels.

Set your audio output to stereo

In Windows, turn off any system spatialization such as Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos or the virtual surround in your headset software. Those processes conflict with HRTF and cancel out its benefit.

Turn HRTF on in Valorant

Open the game settings, go to the Audio section and enable the HRTF option. It requires a stereo output, which the previous step has taken care of.

Set your relative volumes

Turn the menu music and the agent voice lines down, and leave sound effects at maximum. What you care about is footsteps and abilities, not the dressing.

Test it in a custom game

Start a custom game on your own and move through the stairs and under the balconies to hear your own positioning again. You can use the custom game cheats to move around freely.

The most common mistake

Stacking spatializations. Plenty of players turn the Valorant HRTF on while leaving the virtual surround of their headset and the one in Windows running. The result: three processes one after the other, a blurred sound image, and localization that is worse than plain stereo. One spatialization at a time, and preferably the one in the game.

AUDIO QUALITY

Audio quality is the first criterion to consider when buying a gaming headset, but not in the sense the phrase usually carries. What counts here is not how rich the sound is, it is accuracy and legibility.

Look for a balanced frequency response and minimal distortion, for a clear and precise sound. Be wary of headsets whose main selling point is bass power: they are built for music and movies, and they drown footsteps in the low end.

In other words, a 7.1 label on the box is not a quality criterion for Valorant. It describes a software feature that you are going to turn off anyway.

This is a distinction that product pages rarely mention, and it counts for more than most of the specs they advertise.

How to decide

Ask yourself one single question: is there noise around you when you play? If so, closed back, without hesitating. If you play in a quiet room and you string long sessions together, open back gives you better comfort and at least equal localization.

DESIGN AND COMFORT

The design and the comfort of the headset are decisive. You will probably spend several hours at a time wearing it, and an uncomfortable headset ends up making you cut your sessions short, or worse, distracting you at the wrong moment.

Look for a headset that offers thick padding on the earcups and the headband. The earcups have to be large enough to enclose your ears completely: that is what is called an over-ear, or circumaural, design, and it helps both with isolation and with listening fatigue.

The headset also has to be light. Past about 350 grams, roughly 12 ounces, the weight makes itself felt over a two hour session. Look for ergonomic designs that spread the pressure rather than concentrating it on the top of your head.

If you wear glasses

This is a criterion that often gets overlooked. Leatherette earpads, which isolate better, press the arms of your glasses against your temples and become painful after an hour. Fabric or velour earpads are far more forgiving, at the cost of slightly less isolation.

THE MICROPHONE AND THE CONNECTION

The microphone, the other half of the job

If you play online, you will need a microphone. And in a game where information travels by voice, its quality is not a comfort detail: a microphone that clips or chops up your callouts makes your team less effective.

Look for a detachable or retractable microphone, more practical when the headset is also used outside of games, and check that it has a physical mute, on the cable or on the earcup. That is the kind of detail whose value you measure the day you forget to mute yourself.

Compatibility and type of connection

It matters to pick a headset that is compatible with your platform. Most models work with PC, Xbox and PlayStation, but there are exceptions. If you play on several systems, favor a model that is compatible with all of them.

On PC, three options exist side by side. The 3.5 mm jack is the most universal and the simplest. USB carries its own sound card, which works around a mediocre motherboard but locks in the signal processing. Wireless with a dedicated dongle gives latency you cannot tell apart from wired, unlike Bluetooth on its own, whose delay is incompatible with competitive play.

A point that is often misunderstood

A USB headset is not inherently better than a jack headset. It simply includes its own converter. If your motherboard is recent, the jack will give an equivalent result, with the advantage of working everywhere, consoles and phones included.

Do you need a 7.1 headset for Valorant?

No, and in most cases it is actually counterproductive. Virtual 7.1 surround simulates extra speakers through software processing, which adds an artificial layer and often blurs localization. Valorant has its own spatialization system, HRTF, which works in stereo and gives better results. A good stereo headset with HRTF turned on beats a 7.1 headset that is poorly used.

What is HRTF and how do you turn it on?

HRTF, for Head-Related Transfer Function, is a spatialization technique that reproduces the way your ears perceive the direction a sound comes from. Valorant has it built in: go to the settings, Audio section, and enable the HRTF option. It is free, it works with any stereo headset, and it clearly improves vertical localization, the one that tells you whether an opponent is above you or below you.

Open back or closed back headset for Valorant?

Closed back in the vast majority of cases. It isolates you from outside noise, which counts when a quiet footstep decides a duel, and it stops sound leaking into your microphone. An open back headset offers a wider soundstage and better comfort over a long session, but it assumes a silent environment. If you play in a shared room, closed back is the obvious answer.

Is a fifty dollar headset good enough to play well?

Yes. Past a certain quality threshold, what limits your reading of the sound is no longer the headset but your listening habits and your settings. A decent closed back headset at fifty dollars, with HRTF turned on and the effect volume set properly, will give you the essentials of the information. The extra money buys comfort, isolation and a better microphone, not better localization.

Do you need a wireless headset?

That is a comfort choice, not a performance one. Models with a dedicated dongle show latency you cannot tell apart from wired, so nothing stands in the way. Avoid headsets that are Bluetooth only, though, as their delay is far too long for gaming. And keep in mind that for the same budget, a wired headset generally offers better audio quality, since the wireless part is expensive to build.

Gaming headset, or headphones with a separate microphone?

The second option gives better results at a high budget, from around one hundred and fifty dollars. A studio headphone paired with an external microphone outperforms most gaming headsets, both in reproduction and in voice quality. Below that budget, the gaming headset stays simpler and more coherent, since everything is built in and already set up for gaming.
