Most PC buying guides reason as if you were about to run the heaviest games on the market. For Valorant, that reasoning leads you to spend far too much, and usually in the wrong place.
This guide is not trying to sell you the most powerful machine possible. It is trying to tell you where to put the money for this game specifically, and where you can save without losing a thing. LAPTOP OR DESKTOP: THE REAL TRADE-OFF
That is the first question, and it has no universal right answer. Both formats work perfectly well for Valorant. What changes is what you agree to give up.

Ask yourself two questions. Do you always play in the same place? If so, a desktop gives you more for your money and lets you choose a high refresh rate monitor, which counts for more than raw power. Do you plan to play much heavier titles? If not, an entry-level laptop is plenty and saves you buying three peripherals on top.
WHY VALORANT IS A SPECIAL CASE
Riot Games built Valorant to run on the widest possible range of machines, older builds included. That is a deliberate choice tied to the competitive nature of the game: better that everyone can play at a high frame rate than that the game looks pretty.
The practical consequence matters and is often missed. At high frame rates, it is the processor that holds you back, not the graphics card. A player who puts the whole budget into a high-end card will get very little out of it in this game, while a faster processor and properly configured memory make a real difference.
This is the most profitable line of reasoning on this page. The budget you do not sink into an oversized graphics card is far better spent on a 144 or 240 Hz monitor and a mouse that fits your hand.
A $1,000 machine paired with a 60 Hz screen will be less pleasant and less effective in game than a $700 machine paired with a 144 Hz one. Think in terms of the complete setup, not the tower.
THE COMPONENTS, IN ORDER OF REAL IMPORTANCE
Here is the order in which to arbitrate your budget for this game, from the most decisive component to the least critical.
The processor
Top priorityIt is what decides your frame rate in Valorant, and that feels backwards when you come from other games. A recent mid-range processor, a Ryzen 5 or a Core i5 from the last few generations, is plenty.
What matters here is not the core count but per-core performance. An eight-core chip with slow cores will push fewer frames than a fast six-core one.
Memory, in dual channel
High prioritySixteen gigabytes is the right level today. But the point that really matters is elsewhere: the memory has to be installed in dual channel, meaning spread across two sticks rather than sitting on a single one.
This is the most common trap on entry-level machines, which often ship with one single 16 GB stick. What you lose is measured in tens of frames per second, and it shows up on no spec sheet at all.
The graphics card
Medium priorityThis is where the budget frees up. Valorant runs very comfortably on entry-level and mid-range cards, previous generations included. A card released three or four years ago is still more than enough.
If Valorant is all you play, there is no point moving up a tier. If you also play heavier titles, this is the component to arbitrate on.
Storage
ComfortAn NVMe SSD is the standard today and is no longer up for debate. It will not improve your frame rate, but it cuts loading times and hitches noticeably.
Plan generously: the game grows with every act, and the install needs temporary room to unpack itself.
Cooling
Worth watchingIt brings no performance of its own, but it stops you losing any. A machine that runs hot throttles its clocks, and your frame rate drops mid-session, exactly when you are stacking games back to back.

THE CRITERION NOBODY WILL TELL YOU ABOUT: TPM 2.0
This is probably the most useful point on this page, and you will find it on no spec sheet. On Windows 11, Valorant's anti-cheat requires two security features to be present and turned on: TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. Without them, the game simply refuses to launch.
Every recent new machine supports them, so the risk is low on something bought in store, at a Best Buy or a Micro Center. It becomes real on refurbished units, used machines or repurposed office PCs, where you still find builds that lack them or whose motherboard does not offer them.
Ask the seller for a screenshot of msinfo32, which should show BIOS mode set to UEFI and Secure Boot enabled, plus a screenshot of tpm.msc stating that the module is ready for use. That is a thirty second check that saves you from an unusable purchase.

Do you need a powerful PC to play Valorant?
No, and that is what makes this game unusual. Valorant was built to run on a very wide range of machines, older ones included. A mid-range build goes well past a hundred frames per second at 1080p, and even a computer with no dedicated graphics card, as long as it has a recent processor, is comfortable to play on. The money you save is far better spent on a high refresh rate monitor and a mouse that fits your hand.
Laptop or desktop for Valorant?
Both work, and the choice comes down to how you use the machine. A desktop gives more performance for the same money, improves one component at a time and lets you pick your own monitor. A laptop brings mobility, a smaller footprint and a package that is already complete. If you always play in the same spot and plan to upgrade over time, get a desktop. If you move around or are short on space, an entry-level gaming laptop will do the job perfectly for years.
Is a previous-generation graphics card enough?
Easily. On Valorant, a card released three, four or even five years ago still sits comfortably above what the game asks for. It is in fact the component where saving money pays off most if Valorant is your main use. The real limiting factor is the processor, not the graphics card.
Why does dual channel memory matter so much?
Because Valorant leans heavily on memory access speed, and a single stick halves the available bandwidth. Two 8 GB sticks push noticeably more frames per second than one 16 GB stick, for the same total capacity. Plenty of entry-level machines ship with a single stick, and that appears on no spec sheet. Adding a second one is often the cheapest and most effective upgrade you can make.
Should you check for TPM 2.0 before buying?
Yes, absolutely, and it is a point no salesperson will raise. On Windows 11, Valorant's anti-cheat requires TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. Every recent machine supports them, but they are not always enabled by default, and some very old or refurbished builds simply do not have them. How well does a gaming laptop hold up after a few years?
On Valorant, it stays perfectly viable. The game barely moves in technical demands from one act to the next, unlike titles that get heavier every year. A mid-range machine bought four or five years ago still keeps up today without trouble, as long as you keep an eye on dust in the cooling, which is the real cause of performance loss over time.
