THE STORY OF GEKKO

Mateo Armendáriz De la Fuente, better known as Gekko, grew up in the neighborhoods of Los Angeles surrounded by his family and his friends. The son of immigrants, he carries a deep loyalty to his own, a loyalty he has carried over into his relationship with his Radianite creatures.

Unlike most agents in the protocol, Gekko did not get his powers by accident or through forced experimentation. He tamed four unstable Radianite entities: Dizzy, Wingman, Mosh and Thrash. Where others would have seen weapons, he saw a bunch of friends. He treats them like members of his crew, talks to them, cheers them on, picks them back up after every mission.

That approach makes Gekko a genuine outlier in the VALORANT universe: where the protocol sees tactical tools, he sees a chosen family. His optimism and his lightness cut against the surrounding gravity. But make no mistake: his ability to control entities nobody else can go near makes him one of the team's most valuable assets.

Gekko steers Thrash through enemy territory, then makes her lunge and explode, detaining every enemy nearby.

HOW TO PLAY GEKKO

01
Always pick your globules back up

This is THE Gekko mechanic. After use, Dizzy, Wingman and Thrash leave a globule on the ground. Walk over it to reclaim the ability and throw it again. A good Gekko uses each one twice a round: that is double the utility of any other initiator.

02
Wingman plants the Spike for you

On a post-plant or a retake under pressure, send Wingman to plant while you hold the angle. It saves rounds where you are alone against two and the timer is running down. Few players think of this option: use it.

03
Dizzy before the entry, not after

Dizzy blinds anything that looks at her. Send her just before your duelist swings, not once the fight has already started. The timing of a flash is worth more than its power, and Gekko's needs no lineup to learn.

04
Mosh against defuses

Mosh covers a wide area and deals continuous damage. Throw it on the Spike when the enemy tries to defuse: he either stops or he dies. It is also excellent for dislodging a player tucked away on defense.

THE VALORANT INITIATORS

ROLE: INITIATOR

Masters of information and site entry. Seven agents who reveal, blind and dislodge the enemy so their team can go in without flipping a coin.

EVERYTHING ABOUT GEKKO IN VALORANT

Gekko is one of the most accessible agents in Valorant and the best way to discover the initiator role. Released in March 2023, this character from Los Angeles stands out for a mechanic unique in the game: reclaiming his abilities. Where other agents spend their utility once, Gekko can throw most of his creatures again after picking them up off the ground. That generosity, combined with a kit that asks for no lineup to memorize, makes him a particularly good recommendation for beginners who want to contribute to their team without spending hours in the practice range.

Yes, Gekko is among the easiest agents on the roster to pick up. His flash, Dizzy, needs no lineup: you just send her toward the enemy area and she automatically blinds any opponent who looks at her. His other abilities are just as intuitive. Above all, the globule reclaim mechanic forgives mistakes: if you use an ability badly, you can often pick it back up and try again. He is an excellent first initiator, on a par with KAY/O or Breach.

After use, Dizzy, Wingman and Thrash turn into an inert globule on the ground. Walking over it lets Gekko reclaim the ability and throw it again. Dizzy and Wingman come back roughly 20 to 30 seconds after their globule; Thrash can only be reused once. Mosh is the exception and cannot be reclaimed. That mechanic gives Gekko far more utility available over a long round than any other initiator, provided you remember to pick up.

Wingman is the only ability in the game able to plant and defuse the Spike in the place of the player. On attack, that lets you plant from a safe angle while Gekko holds a sightline. On defense, Wingman can start a defuse while you cover the approaches. It is an extremely powerful clutch tool in a 1v1 or 1v2 with the timer running down.

Mateo Armendáriz De la Fuente is a young man from Los Angeles born into a family of immigrants. Unlike most agents, he went through no Radianite experimentation: he tamed four unstable Radianite entities nobody else could go near. He sees them as his group of friends rather than as weapons, which explains the warm, protective tone he uses with them in game. That unique relationship makes him a character apart in the narrative of the VALORANT Protocol.
