KAY/O

The machine built to kill Radiants

“Target identified. Abilities suppressed. Move up.”

KAY/O, a Valorant agent
KAY/O

THE STORY OF KAY/O

KAY/O is not a recruited agent, he is a salvaged weapon. Built in another world for one purpose, killing Radiants, he was found, reactivated and turned against the people who deployed him.

The irony of his situation is total: he now fights alongside the very people he was programmed to destroy. His teammates know it, so does he, and nobody really pretends it is comfortable. But in a war where the enemy has powers nothing seems able to stop, a machine that can switch them off is worth every reservation in the world.

That single function defines his whole gameplay. Where the other initiators look for information or push the enemy back, KAY/O does something nobody else can: he cuts off enemy abilities. For a few seconds, the site across from you is no longer held by five agents but by five players with a gun, no utility and no ultimate.

HOW TO PLAY KAY/O

01
The flash goes over the angle, not into it

FLASH/DRIVE detonates after a fuse. If you throw it straight down the corridor in front of you, the enemy has time to turn away. Lob it over a wall or a box so it appears behind them: they only see it coming at the moment it bursts.

02
ZERO/POINT before the entry, never during

The blade suppresses the abilities of the enemies it hits for only a few seconds. Throw it just before your team commits, not once the duel has already started. Timed right, it stops Sage from placing her wall and Killjoy from setting off her swarms.

03
NULL/CMD lets your team revive you, so enter first

During NULL/CMD, you can be revived if an ally comes to stabilize you. That changes how you play the ultimate completely: you can go in first and take risks nobody else can take. Warn your team before you activate it.

04
FRAG/MENT dislodges, it does not kill

Its damage is only really lethal at the center of the zone. Do not count on it to finish a player behind cover: use it to force him to move and expose himself, then take the duel on good terms.

THE VALORANT INITIATORS

ROLE: INITIATOR

Masters of information and site entry. Seven agents who reveal, blind and dislodge the enemy so their team can go in without flipping a coin.

EVERYTHING ABOUT KAY/O IN VALORANT

KAY/O is the easiest initiator to pick up in Valorant, and yet one of the most decisive in coordinated play. His kit asks for no lineup to memorize: two flashes thrown over an angle, an explosive grenade and a suppression blade. That last one makes him unique on the whole roster, since it flatly stops the enemies it hits from using their abilities for a few seconds. Added to the game in June 2021, he remains a solid pick at every level and is, alongside Gekko and Breach, the best way into the initiator role.

Yes, he is one of the best first initiators in the game. His two flashes are simply thrown over an angle and work without learning a single precise position, unlike Sova's arrows, which take hours in the practice range. His grenade is intuitive and his suppression blade is thrown like an ordinary projectile. A beginner can contribute usefully to the team from their very first game with him, which is far from true of every agent.

Suppression stops an enemy from using their abilities for several seconds. It is an effect only KAY/O can apply in the entire game. In practice, a suppressed Sage can no longer place her wall, a Killjoy can no longer set off her swarms, a Jett can no longer dash. On a site take, that turns five agents with utility into five players holding a gun. It is also the only reliable answer in the game to certain defensive ultimates.

When KAY/O activates NULL/CMD, he enters a state where being downed does not kill him outright: he drops into an unstable state and a teammate can come stabilize him to put him back in the round. That lets him play far more aggressively than usual, going in first on a site. The trade-off is that the teammate coming to pick him up is exposed too, so you have to warn the team before casting the ultimate.

KAY/O is a machine built in another world for the specific purpose of killing Radiants, the humans who have powers. Salvaged and then reactivated by the VALORANT Protocol, he now fights alongside the very people he was programmed to destroy. That contradiction sits at the heart of his writing and fuels several in-game exchanges, notably with the Radiant agents on the team, who never quite know where they stand with him.
